That this time of year is often the start a new chapter in our life-
 Kids heading into a new grade, or even a new school 
Young adult children heading off to college

Last year the new chapter for me was my son, Troy, heading off to University of Illinois Urbana Champaign as a Freshman.

This year we are moving my Mom into an assisted living facility.
 I find each to be bittersweet. 

 We pour our hearts & souls into our children preparing them to launch- then when they do, we are proud & excited for them…and come home to realize a long chapter of our life has come to a close: that home is likely never going to feel quite the same. Even though (I thought) I’d been preparing myself for that time, I was much more emotional than I anticipated- I shed quite a few tears…grieving the loss of my little boy, the relationship we had- trying to look through those tears to happily anticipate the evolution of our relationship as he more fully steps into manhood.

And now Mom: of course it’s a relief to know there will be a caring community around her 24/7, some of whom are much better equipped to deal with the eccentricities of cognitive decline. Since she is quite social, but has been spending quite a bit of time by herself, it is sweet that she will have more opportunity to make friends & enjoy activities planned for the residents. Sad that she is stepping out of the chapter of being such a capable woman; who poured out her heart & soul to prepare me to launch, who took such good care of me as I struggled through separation & divorce, now stepping fully into the chapter of no longer being capable of independence, needing so much care from others.

Certainly it’s only fitting that we care for those who cared for us- just again a grieving of the shift in our relationship. Sure, I kinda started “parenting” Mom a while ago as she was having more & more challenges. However when the responsibility was lightened by her amazing caregiver & my awesome brother, she stayed living “on her own”. Although I would still go help her, manage her meds, take her out to music in the park & to some doctor’s appointments...I guess there was a little bit of denial, fooling myself or just delaying the inevitable.

 WOW, sorry it got heavy- this started off to be more of a lighthearted awareness & call to action- “now that the kids are back to school, it’s time for you to take your back to school”.  Time to turn the page, to enter the chapter in which you learn to bring your spine back into warranty & with it your life, to take care of yourself. 
 Of course we know that aging is inevitable- nobody yet has discovered a way to stop it, BUT to quote one of my wonderful students “Senior stoop IS NOT INEVITABLE!”
 So let me help you to age STRONG!
